Common Hearing Aid Problems and How to Fix Them at Home

Even the best hearing aid can act up occasionally. The good news? Most common problems have a simple fix you can do at home in a few minutes. Here is our troubleshooting guide for the issues our customers in Pakistan ask about most.

1. No Sound at All

Possible causes and fixes:

  • Dead battery: Replace with a fresh 1.5V battery. Make sure the sticker is removed from the new battery.
  • Battery inserted wrong way: Check the + and − signs.
  • Battery door open: Close it firmly until it clicks.
  • Blocked receiver or tube: Remove wax with the cleaning brush.
  • Volume at minimum: Turn the rotary volume switch up.

2. Whistling or Feedback

Whistling usually means amplified sound is escaping and re-entering the microphone:

  • Push the ear dome in fully — a loose fit causes feedback.
  • Try the next size of silicone ear dome (spares are included).
  • Check the tube for cracks and replace it if damaged.
  • Turn the volume down slightly.

3. Weak or Distorted Sound

  • Low battery: Weak batteries cause distorted sound — replace them.
  • Wax in the receiver: Clean the receiver and dome gently with the brush.
  • Moisture: Dry the device in a drying jar with silica gel overnight.

4. Device Dies Quickly After a New Battery

  • Always switch the device off (or open the battery door) when not in use.
  • Avoid storing batteries in hot places like a car dashboard.
  • If the problem continues, the battery contacts may need cleaning — wipe them gently with a dry cloth.

5. Sound Is Very Quiet in Noisy Places

That is normal for entry-level devices. Higher-gain digital models like the AXON X-168 handle background noise better. If the environment is very loud, move closer to the person you are talking to.
